I was supposed to die in Binding of Issac, but Why did I turnedturn into a Demon! Help!demon instead of dying?

While playing the bindingBinding of isaacIsaac, I should have died when fighting Monstro II, but instead iI got a message on a blue screen saying (iI think): "Today is a bad day to have a castle" and it. It gave me half a heart back and changed isaacIsaac into a demon for about 5 seconds. Is that normal, and if it is what item is it?
