I'm building my little base so that I can see around where I'm currently located at night, so see whether it's safe to go out the next morning, etc. I'd like to make my outer wall out of glass for this reason.

In order to keep Creepers from being dangerous while viewing from inside the base, however, I'm planning a two walled base. The outer wall keeps creepers far enough away from the player (who is confined to the inner wall), such that so long as the player is anywhere inside the inner wall, the creeper cannot detonate.

In order to do that, I need to know how much space to leave between the outer and inner walls. And in order to do that, I need to know what the creeper's activation radius is.

So... what is it?

Mobs without line of sight won't react to you. Any block, including glass, counts as blocking line of sight. One wall is fine.

I've stared at creepers through a one-block glass wall, no problem. I later had a creeper blow next to the same wall when I was outside, some of the sand just inside the wall was blasted.

  • Yes, creepers need line of sight to activate. However, all mobs will appear to "look" at you even if they don't have LoS; they just won't become aggressive (or start counting down, in the creeper's case).

You should only need two blocks between you and the creeper. They only activate if they are within one block of you. I created a two layer wall in my base and would just stare at them all day long right in front of me, they never activated. You might get away with one block but just to be safe and since I know two works, I would stick with that.

What level of difficulty is that?

I'm thinking it's about 4 squares. At least, if you stay 4 squares away I'm sure you'll be fine.

  • So inner wall <-> 2 empty spaces <-> outer wall is safe? (Both walls made of glass) Nov 13, 2010 at 4:24

Have you experienced creepers blowing you up through glass before? I was under the impression that glass was as good as obsidian in terms of sight -- as far as mobs are concerned, anyway. Nov 13, 2010 at 5:43
  • @Raven: No -- I just didn't want to take the chance. I didn't think the creeper needed line-of-sight in order to decide to blow up. Nov 13, 2010 at 17:19

I've faced Creepers through a one block thick glass wall, and they didn't explode. Nov 13, 2010 at 21:44
  • Well, looks like I'm a bit too cautious :D

According to Know Your Meme, a creeper activates when it is within a 1 block range and you have exactly 1.5 secs to get away or kill it before it explodes.

    Not through a wall it won't. Sep 11, 2012 at 6:03

Creepers only detonate if you're within one block of distance, however once the process starts it can only be halted if you manage to get 7 blocks away from the creeper (or just kill it, it's really not that hard, practice a bit in creative and you'll see how easy it is). This is why swords and Knockback enchantments exist, just saying...
