Is it possible to zoom out/in during gameplay in DF and not through altering the init.txt file and reloading the game?

The mouse scroll-wheel works for me on Windows and Mac versions. The square bracket keys [ and ] also zoom out and in (respectively).

See: Dwarf fortress mode: Main Screen

  • Note that you can change the "zoom speed" in the init file, which modifies how much the zoom level changes when you scroll the mousewheel.

Yes, it is. It is, I think, the only keyboard command not listed in green somewhere in the side menu, which is why so many people have trouble with it. To zoom in and out you hold shift and press either the > or < key (right next to the right-hand shift key) the number of zoom levels you wish to move, depending on which direction you wish to move, in oro out.

This doesn't really zoom. It moves the perspective up and down. Real zooming will increase and decrease the size of the tiles on the screen.

This isn't zooming – this changes the z level of the local view. Commented Feb 10, 2017 at 18:15

In LinuxLNP 44.12 at least Ctrl+3 zooms in and Ctrl+4 zooms out.
