I am making some more Biospheres, and need to get grass onto a raised dirt platform. For my previous pair, I created a dirt bridge from a nearby hill that was at the same level, but it took an age to get across. Is there a better way?

Dirt Platform

edit

I should have said, no hacks! I know it's trivial to hack in a grass block!

With the silk touch enchantment on any tool, you can obtain a 'grass block' when digging instead of a dirt block. Place the grass in a patch of dirt and it will spread normally.

This is also helpful if you want to transplant Mycelium blocks.

If you want to cheat - hack in a grass block, currently block ID 2.

Otherwise, one solution is to build a dirt walkway/staircase from the nearest patch of grass to your dirt. The thicker the walkway, the faster the grass will grow, as it has more room to spread.

One tip that I found useful is to place torches down (more the better), in order for the grass to grow at night - this speeds things up a lot :)

EDIT:

Check this thread for a helpful guide, in picture form! (note: some points on there may be out of date, as this is from an earlier build of Minecraft - the majority of it should be correct though)

Now that there's pistons, just rig up a piston to push a grass block up to your platform!

The only way is to build a dirt bridge to get the grass to spread there. But if you make your dirt bridge three or four blocks wide, it will spread faster since there are more targets for the grass to spread to, thus increasing the odds of it happening.

Get an enderman to pick up a grass block and place it on the biosphere.

You can't make an Enderman move a grass block. It's EXTREMELY unlikely. Oct 24, 2015 at 21:13

Endermen frequently move around blocks, you just need to wait till it does

  • @jpd527 I think it would be considerably faster to find the stronghold, kill the Ender Dragon, then find a silk touch tool in a random End city treasure chest.

I play on Xbox (i can't remember what version all I know is it's a few less than 1.14.0) but while making dirt bridges is one way and using pistons is another, making a piston to move grass blocks manually would be a pain and while making an airship (basically a Redstone rocket but on its side) would be fast (minus making it) the problem would be stopping it and if you wanna be lazy and not ride on it and have it stop on its own, you'd need to line up several blocks to stop it ( if you don't ride on it) or find another way to stop it but I find it easier to find an endermen who holds a grass block because when you kill it( p.s I don't know if it will 100% drop the block or if I've been SUPER lucky and its dropped for me every time). but also if you were to get a silk touch tool from the end city and ONLY for the tool, let me ask you, who has the 10-12 maybe even 14 hours to gather resources, get full diamond gear, find all the EOEs(Eye Of Enders), find the stronghold, find the portal ITSELF in the stronghold and everything else you need to defeat the ender dragon and go to the end city? no one! that's who! ya ok, maybe gamers who do it for a living have the time but the thing is if you want a silk touch tool. if you have an endless cow farm and loads of sugarcane and more wood than you could fit in 20 large chests ( over exaggerating) you could make the 18 (at least) bookcases you would need to get an enchantment table to give you a lvl 30 enchant which could be the silk touch you want! and SLAP that enchant on WHATEVER tool you WANT, its much easier than doing the whole other "mission impossible" plan, yes some people would love to do that, taking the low road ( which is fighting the ender dragon and doing mission impossible) rather than getting a better enchantment table or waiting for an endermen to spawn and pick up a grass block, but it's up to you how you execute this "problem"

Welcome to the site! To be honest, I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what you're trying to say here. I'd encourage you to touch up the formatting a bit. Add a couple paragraphs, and touch up your sentences to be a bit shorter.

  • He's saying you could either craft a silk touch pickaxe to collect the normally unobtainable grass block, or travel to The End region and wait for the Enderman enemy to pick up and place a grass block for you. That looks like a lot of editing to apply...

Surprised that no one mentioned this - have a creeper blow up on you on grass (make sure to wear armor so you actually survive). You should get at least one grass block. Reap and repeat!

This does not work. Grass blocks destroyed by creepers drop as dirt blocks. Grass blocks cannot be harvested using this method.
