I got my PlayStation 1 Setup with an RCA cable with a SCART adaptor.

When I play games they appear to be 'stretched' off of the screen and I can only see the middle of the image and this makes it extremely hard to see what I'm doing.

Does anybody know a solution to this problem?

Perhaps it's the actual SCART adapter? The PS1 may not know what to do with the adapter, and as such the image is hellishly stretched. – Kaizerwolf Aug 17 '16 at 17:34
  • Chances are extremely good it's not the console, but either the TV or something in between. – Frank Aug 17 '16 at 18:18

Try pressing the "FORMAT" button to the upper left of the Home button and just below the fast forward button. That should bring a menu you can choose from various picture format options, try them all to see what's best. If that doesn't work you can try adjusting the Screen Edges, see page 34 of the manual: download.p4c.philips.com/files/2/22pfh4000_88/… – user86571 Aug 17 '16 at 18:53
  • Thank you that fixed the issue turned out it was set to movie 16:9 – The Mystery Aug 17 '16 at 19:01

It turned out, that the monitor settings were set to 16:9.

After correction of the settings, the image was ok.
