I just ported over from PS4, and this is the only game I could afford at the time. I want to know if there's a way to play the original storyline, that is, the storyline prior to the release of Rise of Iron and the Taken King.

I play Destiny and I'm familiar to the game and such. I'm not even mad, because I have to make a new character. I just don't feel like paying 9.99 a month (or other payment options) for one game. I have played maybe 4 missions, but it seems like I can't play Strikes without Xbox Live Gold. I can't play in Offline mode, because if I am unable to connect to the Destiny servers, I can't access the game.

Are there any specific workarounds or anything so I don't have to pay a fee to play a single game on a single console that I barely use?

  • I believe you should be able to play through all the missions but not do many activities like crucible, strikes and raids (from memory). I know that some of the taken king content had quest chains that involved doing strikes so you may stone wall on those but there should be plenty of content that you can do without live. It occurs to me to ask: you say you've played four missions and are now asking if you can play the storyline without paying - has it told you that you can't do any more missions at this point? Are you actually stuck or are you just asking about unknown future points? – Chris Oct 24 '16 at 21:45

Destiny is an online-only game (see the very first sentence of the Wikipedia article). You will need an internet connection to your Xbox at the minimum because you need to be connected to the Bungie servers. You can do this through an Xbox Live Silver membership. The big difference between Xbox Live Silver and Gold is that with Silver, you cannot play multiplayer (and it is free).

  • I mean, obviously I have internet connection, not to be rude, or impose, or anything like that. I've played the first few missions, like I mentioned in my post, and I have XBL Silver. – Tactical SF Oct 23 '16 at 19:34
  • You did not mention you have silver. I guess it could be interpreted from your question in a vague sense. What exactly is your question then? If you can do strikes solo? – Timmy Jim Oct 23 '16 at 19:40
  • Yes. Exactly that. – Tactical SF Oct 23 '16 at 19:42
  • It's not possible to Play regular strikes Solo as you need matchmaking to begin them. You can do the night falls and weekly strikes solo I believe. – Timmy Jim Oct 23 '16 at 19:45
  • @TimmyJim: Can you do them without XBL Gold though? – Chris Oct 24 '16 at 21:43

Destiny does indeed require you to be online, but you don't have to buy Gold. You could just get Silver instead, the main difference being no multiplayer.

But if you can't connect to the internet or someone has stolen your email, you're pretty much screwed. Happened to me not too long ago and still can't get it back :/
