In Super Mario Maker (Wii U specifically) what kills Super Mario instantly but without turning him into normal (little) Mario?

My son wants to make a level where becoming Super Mario is bad and you have to go back and get hit by a baddie to turn small again. He wants a one-block-high tunnel to go through that only little normal Mario can enter.

He doesn't want to just put spikes in the ceiling, because it's too easy for Super Mario to just turn small again. So we want some obstacle that'll kill Super Mario instantly.

The only way I see this as being possible is by making a one block high tunnel with the floor being fall-away platforms into lava.

Small Mario will be able to run over the blocks, but Super Mario will have to slide in, lose his inertia, and fall with the blocks into the lava.

  • Ah sorry, just found out that if you jump quickly enough while ducking you can get through the tunnel, because the fall away blocks keep turning off and on, so don't drop away. This is in SMB3 world. – intrepidis Mar 19 '18 at 21:32

Are you using donuts or platforms? Platforms are larger and can be set to fall after a single touch, I believe – nailbones Mar 19 '18 at 21:46
  • Ah yes, we were using donuts. Got it now, and yes it does work. Thanks again. – intrepidis Mar 19 '18 at 21:58

Rather than killing Super Mario, another option we found, to only allow little Mario through, is to have a small downwards drop first before the tunnel.

Now Super Mario can't slide in.

  • Ah, I thought you wanted instant death, not wait around death. – nailbones Mar 20 '18 at 4:53

Either way really. He can jump out. This forces Super Mario to take a harder route. – intrepidis Mar 20 '18 at 7:38

Here is how you make a pipe only normal Mario can enter. Place a pipe sideways and put a treadmill behind it. (MAKE SURE THE TREADMILL ISNT BEHIND THE PIPE AND ON THE GROUND. It must be on top BUT BEHIND!) and there you have it, only small Mario can get in

  • I'm not sure why people are downvoting you (I haven't BTW) rather than adding a constructive comment... I think your wording is confusing as it says "must be on top but behind" and I'm not sure which direction 'top' and 'behind' is exactly. Also adding a picture would be helpful. Thanks for the info! – intrepidis Jun 22 '18 at 8:07
  • Okay, sorry that my wording was kinda confusing, I'll try to describe it better. – Anthony Woolsey Jun 28 '18 at 15:14

When you place a pipe sideways it takes up 4 spaces on the grid, to make it where only small Mario can get in you need to stretch the pipe. (Make it take up 6 spaces) Now, place a tread mill directly above the pipe, then move it down one space. And thats it I hope this makes more sense (BTW couldn't find picture.) – Anthony Woolsey Jun 28 '18 at 15:20
