I have a Game Boy Advance SP and Pokemon Red GEN 1, and I'm curious if it is possible for me to trade a Pokemon from Red to the Virtual Console release of Pokemon Gold on the 3DS

You can't trade from a cartridge to a 3DS console.

But there is a process to go around this, you need a homebrew 3DS (Custom Firmware) and if you have any tool to extract the save file from your cartridge.

The process would have to go somewhat like this:

  1. Extract save file from both games (cartridge and VC game)
  2. Get both saves to your PC and use a save file editor (there are plenty online)
  3. Transfer your Pokemon from the cartridge save to the VC save file
  4. Overwrite your old VC save with your modified one.

That would be a way to do it, is a lengthy process, but worth it if you really want to do it.

  • To add to this, this process is done for the same game on cartidge to its 3DS equivalent i.e. Pokemon Red cartridge to a Red 3DS console. However, if you have either a Pokemon Gold cartridge game or a Red 3DS console, you can either trade from Red to Gold cartridge, or transfer from Red cartridge to Red 3DS console. Then you can transfer from Gold cartridge/Red 3DS console to Gold 3DS console.

Yeah you can just extract the save file and save it to your modded 3ds virtual console red version. From there you can use poke transporter.

With the modded 3ds it gives you access to the folders on your system and there are videos for every step
