I have made "secret doors" with sticky pistons and levers. Mobs spawn freely inside the castle.

I was outside, attempted to pull the lever to get inside. It wouldn't open. I thought, enderman broke it. I find another way in, and go to inspect the internal lever. Lo and behold, a chainmail dressed zombie is standing up in front of the lever. I chase him off, and suddenly, when the zombie is no longer in front of the lever, the door works again.

I thought zombies couldn't affect stuff like that. Is this a new update maybe?

    1. No, they can't. 2. You used the tags for both Minecraft editions. Which one did you actually play? May 24 at 20:27

Fortunately, no, they cannot hold or block levers. However, they can hold a lever (or anything) if it is dropped and hovering on the ground.

P.S. It seems that you are new, so here is a quick tip: don't use tags for both editions of Minecraft (or any game, really) unless your asking if your questions affects both versions (if that is the case, then please provide more detail about that in your question).
