This question has been a long time coming. My answer will undoubtedly be Dota 2 biased because after playing both I feel that it is by far the better competitive game. However, I also believe that everything I say will be accurate- if anything isn't, or you feel there's something I've missed or should clarify, please point it out and I'm happy to change it. ...
To start off, I suggest taking a look at this list that ranks each and every Dota hero by "difficulty" to play, based on six main areas of Dota "knowledge":
I would say that this list is a nice guide to reference if you are looking for heroes to play ...
The composition of your team is the first line of defense against Anti-Mage. Having a good core of gank-tasked heroes (3+) and ideally, no more than 1 hard carry. With Anti-Mage, like many of the late-game carries (Spectre, Void, Antimage), your game should not fixate on countering him late game, but instead ask what counters Anti-Mage?
Wards, Ganks, and ...
Generally speaking you get a number of battle points proportional to how much time the match last but I don't know if this number is capped in some way.
You won’t earn rewards or Battle Points instead if:
You are in the low priority pool.
You abandon a game / trigger a leaver penalty.
You are in a practice lobby.
Update - Some measurements
I am trying ...
With good control, any 5 heroes can kill Roshan before the match begins. It takes a good amount of teamwork and some money spent on health potions, however, and is easily punished if the opposing team realizes it. Because of this, the strategy is rarely seen.
There are certain heroes who are more effective at killing Roshan because of how their abilities ...
There have been concessions in professional LoL. The most notable example I can think of is at IEM Katowice in 2016, Fnatic conceded at 22 minutes to SKT T1 during game 3 of a best-of-5. It generally happens at tournaments where there's a massive skill difference and the losing team concedes out of fatigue. In the case of MSI, Fnatic was on their 4th Bo5 ...
The courier is useful throughout the game as a way to gather new items without needing to slow down your experience/gold gain. The courier is frequently referred to as a 'Donkey' 'Chicken' or 'Chick' because of how it was in original DotA. A flying courier is usually called a 'Crow' for the same reason.
In the laning phase, it's very common for a hero that ...
Understanding why this question is somewhat meaningless requires an understanding of how Starcraft 2's network architecture works.
In most online games, you have a server and a number of clients. Every client will send all of its actions to the server, and the server will send the result of all those actions to every client. The server is the authority - ...
Welcome to Dota, you suck. This aptly titled guide is by far the best for new players to learn Dota2. It's all-encompassing and should have everything you need to get started, but feel free to follow up with additional questions if anything seems confusing.
Here is another great all-purpose guide. It's a little newer so it's not as finely tuned, but it's ...
You can drag items from the store into your "Quick Buy" bar, the bar is located just above the inventory, as seen in the image below:
So when you have the shop open, drag the next item you are planning on buying into that bar, then each of the individual components for that item will appear in that bar (so for example, if you are building power treads boots ...
To call specific people missing, all you have to do is hold Alt and click their hero icon at the top:
Then you'll get a nice message like you described instead of the general lane one.
Also, besides just being able to call people missing, you can also announce that someone has returned by holding Ctrl+Alt and clicking their hero icon in a similar fashion.
Animation canceling is pretty important in dota 2. It serves several purposes such as last hitting better, optimizing the time an enemy is stun by one of your spell or the most important thing in my opinion : Orb Walking. Orb walking consist roughly in moving toward your target as soon as the damage is dealt (either you are melee or range doesn't matter) : ...
There're several ways to do this, most require low ping & fast reflexes:
In DotA, disjointing consist in removing oneself from being the target of a projectile. This can be achieved in several ways :
By blink dodging if you blink as soon as it hits / split second
before. This works with Queen of Pain, Anti Mage, Blink Dagger,
All of the settings mentioned in your screenshot are not specific to Dota 2, many of them appear in other games and some of them appear in pretty much all games. Starting from the top left;
Anti-aliasing: This question details some of the finer points of what Anti-Aliasing is and how it works, although your screenshot above only has an 'on / off' setting so ...
Here are the stats and bonuses provided by each barracks:
5.0 HP/sec regen
100-150 Gold to the last hitter + 275 reliable gold to the entire team that destroys it
When destroyed (boosts opposing creep in that lane by):
Increases Melee Creep damage by 19 points and growth by +1
Increases Melee Creep armour by 1 ...
Pretty much any hero in the game can benefit from jungle in order to free a lane (with creep stacking and pulling :
See Video). There are several characters that can do it without the creeps, Nature's Prophet is one of them and you can start practicing with him. There are several starting items you can get with different benefits:
4 or 5 Clarity Potion: ...
For a solo lane, you want a hero that's somewhat level dependent, as they'll be getting a lot of experience. This could be someone like an Invoker, Leshrac, or Night Stalker. If this lane is solo mid, ideally they'll also be able to utilize runes well to gank, because they'll have the easiest access to them.
As yx. sort of pointed out, it's much harder to ...
The towers will attack enemies in this order:
Closest enemy unit or hero attacking a friendly hero with auto
Closest enemy unit or hero attacking the tower itself with auto
Closest enemy unit or hero attacking any friendly unit with auto
Closest enemy unit
Closest enemy hero
Closest enemy catapult
The tower will switch targets if:
A game becomes safe to leave when someone abandons it (abandon means that the player was disconnected or away from keyboard for 5 minutes, or just pressed Leave Game).
If you disconnect from a game, which is safe to leave or will become safe to leave before you abandon it, you don't get an abandoned point. However, you will still get a win or loss point, ...
As of the 2016 Spring Cleaning update, you can now append items to quick by using Shift + Ctrl + Mouseclick. An example of this can be seen here. Thanks to Ashvin Panicker for the update.
Simply, you cannot. Just try to prioritise what you wish to buy in which order. It is unlikely that you will need to buy your bracer AND ...
When you're last hitting in Dota2, a lot of the damage from creeps is being dealt by the ranged creep. Notice which enemy creep it's attacking and often simply just time your projectile to hit immediately before or immediately after the ranged creep's attack to ensure the last hit. You should be hitting each enemy creep exactly once- this way your enemies ...
There are key-binds you can set up in the options, under the items category I believe, for Purchase Quick-Buy (as described by LagAttack) and also Purchase Sticky (which is a TP scroll by default)
I have Purchase Sticky (TP scroll) bound to space bar, so that if i get ganked and I don't have enough gold for any component of my next item, I can still spend ...
Identify the "steam app" number (I think DOTA2 is 570)
Find the installscript.vdf file in the game's install folder. Open it with a text editor You will see lines like this:
For every "run process" item like DirectX highlighted above, add a new dword parameter in the registry and set it to 1 in the ...
The reason bots only select a limited set of heroes is because the AI hasn't been scripted for every hero in the game yet. Assuming you pick before them, the bots will then try to counterpick any heroes you or your allies have.
You can also 'suggest' heroes which will cause allied bots to choose those heroes, if AI exists for them.
As far as I can tell, ...
The game is entirely free of cost to download and play. The only costs you'll pay (if you want to) are for content that does not even debatably give you an advantage in-game, such as cosmetic items, pennants to support your favorite team, or tickets to watch tournaments in-game.
You can get Dota2 here.
When you stand in front of a creep he will try to pass on your left/right side,so you need to adequately move slightly left/right to block him from passing around you.As long as you keep blocking the first creep on the head of the wave, the creeps that follow will block each other. And avoid scattering the wave(with spells, other heroes,courier...) since creeps ...
On the following image I additionally marked wards i use on regular basis in above average MMR (~3700).Works on AP mode on public matchmaking where counterwarding is less common.
Read full guide here for more detailed explanations about the marked colors and places.
For average skill games with low warding and no counterwards, you should focus mainly on red ...
You can either

Before getting to work, my first advice will be: Play carry. Train and learn to play a hard carry that needs safe farm to be efficient. While you'll be playing, you will notice immediatly what your support needs to do in order to protect you. As far as I remember, being the most experienced player in my party, I always played carry. Needless to say that when ...
