Factorio is a real time strategy game first seen in 2012 that revolves around preparing a new planet for colonization. The game is currently available on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

The main gameplay is controlling a character from a bird's-eye perspective with the aim of preparing a planet for colonization by your own species. The game holds several mechanics similar to Minecraft, in that you must mine ores and gather materials to craft objects. The crafting system is not as interactive as that of Minecraft; it simply consists of a list of craftable items from the materials you have in your current inventory, which craft automatically when you click them. The items take specific lengths of time to craft depending on how complex they are. Items that have many smaller components can be crafted from raw materials; however, the crafting system will then craft all the smaller components individually before crafting the main item. Items are crafted in a queue; so if you craft a complex item with many smaller components, it takes a while before you are able to craft something else that you need.

Once you have a few basic materials (coal, iron, stone, wood and copper), you are quickly able to set up automatic mining drills, which you can setup to feed onto conveyor belts that are automatically put into furnaces to be smelted into pure metals. Complicated though it sounds, this setup is surprisingly quick to build. Soon enough, you are able to build a steam engine and therefore generate electricity. From there you are able to upgrade from coal fired machines to electrical ones. However, the game does not end there. You are able to build a science lab, and conduct research into other useful technology such as radar or new weaponry. The weaponry is required because there are hostile aliens on the planet. Periodic attacks are common, but not overwhelming to the point where they cannot be defeated. You spawn with a basic pistol and limited ammo, but with the research comes new and improved weapons as well as much more technology. The final aim is building a factory to prepare the planet for imminent arrival of your own species.
