The game is named for Pro Football Hall of Famer, coach and color commentator John Madden, who was approached by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins in 1984 for his endorsement and expertise. Madden continues to provide insight and expertise for the game even after retiring from commentary in 2009.
