Mario Kart Double Dash!! is the fourth game in the Mario Kart series, revolving around the mechanic of two characters per kart.

Mario Kart Double Dash!! is the fourth game in the Mario Kart series, released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube.

The main gimmick of Double Dash!! is that there are two characters per kart, a driver and a thrower. The driver's job is to steer and initiate slides, while the thrower's is to use items and build up mini-turbos. Double Item Boxes allow both characters to get an item, which the driver can pass to the thrower, or the characters can simply switch positions at any time.

While the two-per-kart gimmick did not stick around, Double Dash!! made other changes to gameplay that are now considered standard for the series:

  • Characters and karts are selected independently.
  • Strong enough blows can cause players to drop their items onto the track; running over a speed-boost item will apply its effects.
  • Introduces the Bob-omb and an auto-pilot item.
  • The Spiny Shell is much more common and detonates on impact with the leader.
  • The pre-race countdown is now 3-2-1-GO instead of red-red-green.
  • Some courses can have a nonstandard number of laps.

Double Dash!! was also one of the few games to utilize the GameCube Broadband Adapter, allowing up to eight systems to be connected in a LAN for sixteen-player action.
