Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings (Often called just Age of Empires 2) is a RTS published by Microsoft in 1999, being the second in the Age of Empires series.
Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings is the second Age of Empires game, and was released in 1999 for Windows and Macintosh, being developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft.
The game is set in the Middle Ages, and has 13 playable civilizations, along with 5 campaigns, each being historically based, as well as support for multiplayer.
In 2013, and updated version called Age of Empires II: HD Edition was released on Steam, for Windows only. The HD Edition includes the expansion pack, updated graphics, a new multiplayer server, and user-generated content through the Steam Workshop.
Age of Empires 2 has won awards such as:
- Gamer's Choice - 1999 Best Wargame
- Gamespot - Game of the Year
- Gamepower - Best of '99 Strategy Game
While the game makes use of the same game engine, it took a year longer than expected to release.
