They're super tanky, always seemingly manage to stay out of range of my squad's overwatch. The next turn, they seemingly are able to sprint across the map into range of my squad, stun one of them, then survive to the next round where they knock out another squad member into submission. If I get a successful flashbang, they default to their weapons with (somehow godly accuracy) and take down more of my men. I've been restarting missions at least 43 times now, just because of 1 Advent Stun Lancer, and this is on Legendary, so I'd like to know, what's the best way to deal with an Advent Stun Lancer, especially on Legendary difficulty?

  • I have yet to play (curse you work!!!) but it sounds like when you encounter them, use overwatch until they charge in, and use a sniper to plink away if they refuse to enter the overwatch zone. Just my thoughts, have zero practical experience (three more hourssssss) to back it up so not going to post as an answer – Robert Wertz Feb 5 '16 at 18:35
  • That's the problem. They seemingly stay just out of reach of my snipers, and in two turns, are able to make their ways to my front lines, close enough to start wrecking shit and causing panic amongst other teammates – senpai Feb 5 '16 at 20:11

I'm not too far in yet, but my main answer to everything annoying is flashbangs. On a grenadier they have good range and their normal huge AoE. They disrupt mind control, make psi zombies drop back dead (target the sectoid), stun stun lancers, and are in general just really good for crowd control. – Fambida Feb 5 '16 at 23:49

@DavidYell There are no items, but a Psi Operative has the ability to "erase" those conditions for your entire team, and another ability is to make them impervious to all damage and status effects for 1 turn – senpai Feb 11 '16 at 4:35

I can second the idea that these guys aren't that tough on lower difficulties. I'm nearly through the game on Veteran, and Stun Lancers were only tough when I had conventional weapons and no armor. Now they almost always get killed by overwatch charging in. The Specialist's Ever Vigilant ability helps. – DCShannon Feb 11 '16 at 22:20

On Legend, the best way I've found to deal with them is kinda cheesy. I had two Sharpshooters at one point and a Ranger. A ranger with Phantom is a real lifesaver. Never let him get spotted and have him locate the lancer pods with the rest of your squad still in the drop zone. (This wouldn't be much help on the timed missions) You can then pick the buggers off with Squad Sight if your aim is high enough. From experience, even though the squad breaks concealment, if you're far enough away from line of sight, the aggro'ed pod has trouble finding you.

  • Rangers with Bladestorm will attack the stun lancer before he gets to attack them. This can kill the lancer, or stun them, preventing the attack. – DCShannon Mar 9 '16 at 15:16
  • @DCShannon: That is a nice side effect, but IMO nothing you can rely on tactically. Its more like a potential life saver if something went wrong already :) – Rev1.0 Apr 1 '16 at 8:13
  • @Rev1.0 I've been able to rely on it pretty consistently, but results may vary. – DCShannon Apr 2 '16 at 0:35
