The Engineer is TF2's "auxiliary shenanigans" class. While average at best in combat, the contraptions he constructs provide invaluable aid to the team and are often an important component of any win.

The Engie's not exactly a slouch when it comes to his loadout: an average shotgun and a pistol with near-bottomless ammo capacity allow him to go even with other supporting classes and pester bigger guys should he feel daring. But his real purpose is to use his wrench to erect buildings for his allies' benefit: Sentry Guns to defend areas, Dispensers to provide a constant supply of health and ammo, and Teleporters to cut travel times and keep the pressure on the opposing team. Buildings can be leveled up to improve their abilities and hauled to new areas once the frontlines move up.

Once properly set up, an Enginner can use his buildings to cement his team's hold on an area, making it very difficult for the enemy to bust through without an Übercharge or sheer numbers (indeed, the Sentry Gun is the main reason the Übercharge exists). As a result Engineers are naturally suited for defending an area rather than attempting to assult one, though items like the Gunslinger can encourage offensive play. While buildings are immune to status effects and critical hits, Enginners must look out for the indirect explosive barrages of Soldiers and Demomen that can take them out with little trouble, in addition to Spies that intend to disable and destroy them with his Sappers.
